Beaufort is a city in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States, situated on the Beaufort River.
Founded in 1711, it is the second-oldest city in South Carolina, behind Charleston.
The city's population was 12,950 in the 2000 census (46,227 total pop. of Beaufort Urban Cluster).
It is the county seat of Beaufort County and part of the Hilton Head Island-Beaufort Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Beaufort unlike its counterpart in North Carolina) is located on Port Royal Island,
in the heart of the Sea Islands and Lowcountry.
