The trail winds through the west shore of Boyd Lake, along irrigation canals, through fields, over city streets, and along the Big Thompson River. The City of Loveland maintains 26 developed parks on 281 acres containing 20 softball fields, 25 playgrounds, 14 picnic shelters, 4 racquetball courts and 21 tennis courts. The City offers an extensive Athletics Program. It is comprised of adult and youth programs, and also includes the use of many of the facilities and fields located around the city. Many of the athletic programs can be enjoyed year-round. Loveland offers golfers three great courses... 18-hole Marianna Butte (Rated: 4 Stars); the 18-Hole Olde Course at Loveland (Rated: 4 Stars); and the Par 3, 9-hole Cattail Creek) The Chilson Recreation Center is a state-of-the-art full service recreation facility. It comprises 67,000 square feet of amenities including a fitness atrium with two lines of circuit weight equipment, cardiovascular machines, a free weight center, aerobics studio, 8-lane pool, racquetball courts, two gymnasiums, an exercise track, indoor and outdoor whirlpools, steam room, conference facilities, child care, concessions/TV lounge and a senior wing. Boyd Lake State Park - The most modern water sports facility in northern Colorado, Boyd Lake State Park boasts over 1,700 surface-acres of water for boating, fishing, sailing and more. A sandy beach and seasonably warm water make Boyd Lake a favorite among windsurfers, water skiers and swimmers. Modern camping facilities, picnic areas, a playground and a trail system round out the activities. Located just off of Madison Avenue in northeast Loveland. Rocky Mountain National Park - Established by Congress on January 26, 1915, Longs Peak, the highest peak in the park, is 14,255' in elevation. Elk, mule deer, big horn sheep, moose, coyotes, and a great variety of smaller animals call the 416 square miles (265,769 acres) of the National Park home. During the winter months snow-shoeing and cross country skiing are very popular. Hiking is available on 355 miles of trails. Almost 90% of the park is managed as wilderness, making it a great place to enjoy solitude and the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Located approximately 35 miles west of Loveland via U.S. 34.
