The design of the Town Seal is both purposeful and aesthetically pleasing. Its theme is the white mulberry leaf,
the food of the silkworm, since the silk industry contributed most to the growth, culture and fame of Manchester.
The prominent element in the design is the mulberry leaf shape. This shape plays two roles, for within the leaf shape there
is also a tree-like shape embellished with many small mulberry leaves which together form both the leaf and the tree.
This tree represents a symbol which helps tie in the village charm aspect of Manchester. A tree is symbolic, representing life,
beauty, growth, permanence, solidity and protection.
Although the design is simple, it is easily identifiable and is legible at a distance. It is also contemporary in its design to
portray the Town's progress in the modern world. The colors are also symbolic: the green leaf shape and the reddish-brown
lettering against a circle of yellow gold. The colors connote nature itself. The green foliage and the red-brown earth give
feelings of tranquility and security. The golden sun warms us, cheers us, and gives us bright optimism. In a manner of speaking,
these are our "village" colors.
At the base of the leaf tree, the date is formed by a silk thread. The words "Town of Manchester Connecticut Seal" make a
circular form, almost enclosing the leaf shape -- almost, but not quite -- for the tip of the tree is bursting through the circular
border of letters; it is a growing tree. In the seal, all four elements required by law are incorporated: the name of the city or town,
the name of the state, the date of establishment, and the word "seal" itself. It is a seal that is pleasant to look at and one which
graphically represents the image of the Town of Manchester in a very pleasing manner.
