The beautiful resort of Paphos in Cyprus
is located on the west of the island, and is home to the second
international airport on the island.
It nestles between the Troodos Mountains
and is on the Mediterranean coast. It is a popular holiday destination,
and the city is steeped in history.
Situated only 10 km from the airport, it
consists of 2 separate areas, including the actual town and the
coastal region of Kato Paphos. The town has a wonderful fishing
harbour and fort, as well as many restaurants and cafes serving
traditional and international cuisine. The Greek goddess Aphrodite
is alleged to have been born on the coast here at Petra Tou Romiou
which is 25 km from the town of Paphos, and the area contains
many remnants of her legend, such as the Baths of Aphrodite and
the Venus Rock.
The Tombs of the Kings cover a vast expanse
of land. These are underground tombs which date as far back as
4 BC. There are numerous churches and museums located around
the area close to Paphos as well. Tourists to the region can
visit vineyards and banana plantations or just relax on the many
lovely beaches.
The climate in Cyprus means that there
are an average of 300 days of glorious sunshine per year. Coral
Bay is located 4 miles north of Paphos and is a popular beach,
with miles of soft sand and incredibly blue sea. With 4 main
beaches in Paphos there are plenty of water sports on offer such
as jet skiing, fishing, parasailing and snorkelling. Diving is
a popular activity throughout the year and there are many diving
schools who will arrange diving trips, try-dives or beginners
and advanced courses. Paphos Aphrodite Waterpark is a great place
for a family day out, with the largest European rafting ride.
As well as the classical style buildings set in the upper part
of town, there is also a great shopping area filled with souvenir
and gift shops.
There are cheap flights available from
many UK airports to Paphos. Accommodation is plentiful and varied,
