A leisurely self-led road ride exploring the lanes and villages of one of Frances most appealing regions. As they make their lazy way to the Atlantic, the refreshing waters of the Dordogne River pass through some of Frances most beautiful scenery. Its very easy to see why this region has appealed to the British for such a long time - a combination of beautiful views, sleepy villages, fine French food and delicious wine makes it just too enticing to resist! The atmosphere in the local villages compels you to relax, and this trip is designed to offer the maximum time for enjoying the cafés and sights - each day gives an option of a short or a long route, so you can choose to linger and explore, or to strike out further into the countryside. Our circular route starts and finishes in the riverside town of Souillac, and heads out to explore the two types of landscape that define this region - the upland causse dotted with ancient farms and dry-stone walls, and the wooded valleys and lowlands, perfect for the widespread walnut groves - together with their villages and hidden hamlets. As the road winds through shady oak woodland, the mediaeval castles, walnut-oil mills and Rocamadour cheese farms, and the many welcoming cafés, provide ample diversions to hinder your leisurely progress. This is a relatively undemanding self-led road trip following quiet country lanes. Each day offers a choice of a long or a short route, both clearly described in the comprehensive route notes and map. Luggage is transferred from hotel to hotel each day, leaving you free to ride unencumbered and at your own pace. The terrain is hilly in places, but not particularly arduous. Average short route 30km/day (18 miles/day), long route 49km/day (30 miles/day). ITINERARY 8 days starting and ending in Souillac Day 1 Start Souillac. Day 2 Ride to Gluges across Causse de Martel.
