Experience the Pyrenees and marvel its dramatic scenery of the main Pyrenean ridge that forms a natural 'frontiere sauvage' between France and Spain. This is one of Western Europe's finest regions of mountain wilderness, stretching from the atlantic to the Mediterranean. Glacier-clad Pico de Aneto, the highest mountain in the Pyrenees, forms the backdrop to this area of spectacular views. High amongst the peaks are many mountain lakes whose enticing colours tempt the hardy swimmer. The lower hills are a mixture of beech and pine forest, meadows and pastures, that until mid summer are alive with wild flowers. We have a slight chance of seeing a Pyrenean Brown Bear, but much more easily seen are deer, chamois, cultures, buzzards and kites. Although popular with walkers from the locality, this area is relatively free of crowds even in the height of summer. La Feniere - our lodge, is beautifully situated in the Vallee du Lys at 1,080m (3,500 ft) with an inspiring backdrop of 10,000 ft peaks. This converted stone barn is over 100 years old and is only a ten minute drive into the mountains from the town of Bagneres de Luchon. There is accommodations for ten people in twin bedded rooms. The lodge is comfortable, truly homely, pleasantly private and a great place to stay. There is a lounge/dining area and a large garden with views of the border range. The walking - we will see few other people on our varied program of day walks. Rather than walking out of the lodge, to ensure we experience the true variety of the central Pyrenees on most days, we drive a short distance to the trail heads. In general walks are between 5-7 hours, with some variation is difficulty. Our exploration takes us along foresters' tracks, herders trails, old pilgrim routes and maybe short sections of the famous long distance route of the GR10. We will walk through meadows and woodlands, ascend to high pastures, lakes and cols, follow ridges and maybe take in a few of the smaller peaks. Some of the most spectacular are almost on our doorstep, but the Pyrenean panoramas are magnificent no matter which walk you are on. ITINERARY 8 days La Fenière to La Fenière Day 1 Start La Fenière.
